an essay on the future. By Dude! where's my pants? -Man was I drunk!

YOU LIVE IN A CHANGING WORLD. IT'S SO GREAT.THE FUTURE IS NOW, REALLY. NOW.
You live in a world that is moving from an industrial age into a world into one that is more information driven. You pay for, sell, traffic and stop information to or from people. You don't have to make rivets in a hot factory anymore. Actually it's hard to find a job that does that now a days. It's even harder to find a job that is hiring. We're watching you 1%!
The world acts like the planet is spinning off its axis today. We can't quite place ourselves in these quickly evolving times. Its HDTV, that is the future, no, no it's iPods, that is the future, not it's cell phones, no way! it cell phones that navigate you in real time and can transmit video of the other person talkin, no, no its the elimination of books and paper via the pad, no no it's cars that can use a phone and park itself, that is the future! no no it's the technology the makes all this possible! It is all of those things that are the future.
More important than the way of the future is our place in this technological landscape that is ephemeral at best, disposable at worst. It is changing so fast that it will be unrecognizable in a decade, to the 15 year old me. But it is great to think that when I left high school (just a little while ago, really, seems like months, honest) I would never think that everyone would have a computer in their home, let alone several. That everyone would have a phone in their pocket and the stuff you can do on these phones, these are no best-you-can-do-is-have-caller-id phones, this is leaps and bounds on top of leaps in just a little while stuff. Changes are coming faster than we can categorize them or make stand up jokes about them: Did you hear the one about...OH! never mind the newer version just came out and it's going to be upgraded by midnight, sigh.
The internet? what the fuck is that? and Blogs and Tumblr and GIF's? really?GIF's??-Facebook? is that still a thing or did it go the way of myspace and cassette tapes, oh they're back? how about phonographs?- not yet? okay phonographs, did Facebook go the way of phonographs?? Shit. So much, all the time. And make no mistake about it it is amazing it is the future and it is now. That is to be viewed with awe, without a doubt. Never has so much changed so quickly. Advances that once took decades to implement are now being replaced in years.

The real question is if in the quest for these things have we lost our humanity?? Seriously can we still hold on to the ability to differentiate between the real world and a text or IM, while driving on the freeway in a two ton machine at 70 mph? Does that fail to register?? The flaw in that reasoning should be obvious and unmistakeable.

Before I go off, I would just like to let us  take the time and remember to be more human and and allow for human real time. And allow for our humanity and its mistakes. There is a reason for the phrase "Only human". Remember to keep in mind that we live in a big big city. This is a big city that will continue to get bigger and more crowded. More cars not less, yes more cars, more drivers more people. Welcome to the future! And don't let anything scare you away from it, because it is a magnificent thing.
But if you want the future and you want to enjoy everything it may offer (and who doesn't, really?) You have to start planning out your time as if you live in the future. Everything takes longer and longer. In the military they have a saying for this need to be quick but allowing for life's inevitable need to interfere with your plans, they call it HURRY UP AND WAIT. It's an actual measure of time, plan ahead for the need to wait. We are going to have to manage our time better and more efficiently. We'll have to do several things at once more often because it will just take longer to do things, because there is more people. Simple.
Do not worry,  Everything will be fine and we will have the time of our lives if we want and plan for it.That means leave home with enough time to drop off Timmy at the Junior High but pick up some breakfast before that and enough time to sit through 30+ minutes of idle sitting time stuck in traffic.  Pleas remember to drive like a human being with faults and during rush hour, not like an avatar in a simulation video game swerving in and out of traffic trying to beat the clock in a sci-fi movie. This is real life. It's the future, are you ready?
