WHEN I WAS A PARATROOPER IN THE 82ND AIRBORNE DIVISION IN 1972 THERE WERE MANY RACIAL TENSIONS. ESPECIALLY AT FORT BRAGG IN NORTH CAROLINA WHICH HAD A HUGE UGLY KKK BILLBOARD JUST OFF POST.  ONE DAY A WHITE SOLDIER PLAYED THIS ALBUM IN OUR BARRACKS. THE BLACKS SOLDIERS LOVING IT AND WENT LOOKING FOR THE ROOM THAT HAD THE STEREO. THEY EXPECTED A FELLOW BLACK SOLDIER. THEY WERE SHOCKED TO FIND WHITE GUYS OWNED IT AND WE WERE GROOVING TO IT. THE BLACK GUYS ASKED US WHERE WE FIRST HEARD THE BAND WAR. WE EXPLAINED WE WERE FROM CALIFORNIA AND EVERY RACIAL GROUP HAD PEOPLE WHO LOVED WAR. AFTER THAT THE BLACK SOLDIERS KNEW WE COOL AND WE BECAME FRIENDS.

I have memories of this band in my childhood. I can remember just having it play in the background. Some adult played this album continuously on the weekends, probably an older sibling, as I got most of my early exposure to music from them and top 40 radio. It was always a mellow time. I don't associate it with any of our times terrorizing the neighborhood with rollerskates and bicycles. Or any of the angrier times in my childhood (oh yea lots of anger). It was a good time, from what I remember, funny thing being that the band is called WAR. Have a listen. Relax. -manwasIdrunk
